These tools will help you create your own reports similar to those found in Dartmouth Atlas publications. Detailed explanations and instructions are available by clicking Help. The following tools are available:
Hospital Care Intensity Report
The Hospital Care Intensity tool lets you select a hospital or group of hospitals, either from a list, or by state and region, according to the relative intensity of inpatient care delivered by the providers. Prepared reports are given for the selected hospitals. There are three basic reports: the Medicare Spending Report; the Resource Allocation Report; and the Patient Experience Report. You can download all three reports or choose among them.
Benchmarking
Benchmarking can be used to compare the experience in areas or hospitals of your choice to the national average, state average, or to the rate in other areas or hospitals. The table gives the populations and rates in the benchmark and comparison areas; the ratios of the rates in the comparison areas to rates in the benchmark areas; and the number of events in the comparison areas above (+) or below (-) the number predicted by the experience in the benchmark area, if the rate of the benchmark area had been attained for the residents of the comparison areas. The resulting table can be downloaded in Excel or emailed to yourself or another person of your choosing.
Data Table
The Data Table tool provides a simple way to query the database. You can select up to 50 areas or hospitals and 25 variables to display in your table. The resulting table can be downloaded in Excel or emailed to yourself or another person of your choosing.
Distribution Graph
The Distribution Graph provides a simple way to show the distribution of particular measures of health care resources and utilization. Each blue point on the graph represents one of the rates in the database. The vertical axis shows the rate of a variable you select. You can also select up to 25 specific areas or hospitals to highlight, which will appear on the graph as red dots. The result is available both as a graph, which can be emailed or printed, and as a table with the rate values for the chosen event, which can be downloaded in Excel or emailed.
Medical Care Cost Equation
The Medical Care Cost Equation table shows the variation in per decedent spending for either inpatient hospitalizations, physician visits, skilled nursing facility admissions, hospice admissions, or home health agency visits, and evaluates the contributions of price and volume in determining Medicare reimbursements. The equation gives the per decedent rates for spending, volume and price, and gives the ratio to the U.S. average for each component. After creating the table, you can choose to obtain the ratios to a different benchmark, such as a state average, an HRR average, or another hospital.
Profile
The Profile allows you to compare the rates of up to 20 events you choose, in the area or hospital of your choice, to the national distribution of the unsuppressed rates in the database. The result is available both as a graph, which can be emailed or printed, and as a table with relevant rates and rankings for the chosen events, which can be downloaded in Excel or printed.
Geographic Query Finder
The Geographic Query Finder allows you to locate ZIP codes and hospitals by hospital service area (HSA) and referral region (HRR). You can enter your own ZIP code or hospital name to request its HSA or HRR, or you can enter an HSA or HRR name to get a list of ZIP codes or hospitals within it.
Download
The Download page contains a selection of useful tables, including ZIP code to HSA and HRR crosswalk files, geographic boundary files, and Excel tables containing selected rates for hospitals, HRRs, and states. If you would like to download a table with all of the rates for a selected event variable without using the Data Table tool, it may be available on the Download page.
NOTES:
The Data Tools are optimized for use with Internet Explorer 6.0 and Mozilla FireFox 1.0. They may not function properly in other browsers. If you are having problems with the Data Tools, or if you would like detailed instructions, please click Help.
