        • DENOMINATOR DEFINITION:
        • The denominator was the Medicare population enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B and age 65-99 on January 1, 2012. Patients enrolled in risk-bearing HMOs at any time during the year were excluded.

        • NUMERATOR DEFINITION:
        • Inpatient day rates were determined using the MedPAR inpatient claims summary file for 2012.

        • ADJUSTMENTS:
        • Rates were adjusted for age, sex, and race using the indirect method.
